I saw a spreadsheet program that was done by the same person that did
flashWindows. If I remember correctly what they did was to draw all
the cells and whenever a mouse click occured they created an edit field
at that instant and populated it with the cell contents for editing.
Cell selection was done by giving the appearance of hiliting the fields.
I thought it was pretty slick. For years I wondered how they did it until
they freely offered the code and I had the chance to study it.

there can be perfectly valid reasons [imagine a spreadsheet] for having
xx thousand handles each capable of containing text and needing to be
searched. even a simple database...

ps. 16000 was of course an approximation, everyone corrected to 16380
and a little.
