I've hung my hook and worm in that particular lake several times, and have
recieved nary a nibble. Now the clever dudes out there will realize that
there is very serious gold in execution of same.

Until they do, however, we must content ourselves with a Belkin or Keyspan
USB to RS232/423 adaptor, and thence to a microcontroller. Considering the
number of microcontrollers that can handle the RS232/423 compared with their
USB counterparts, this is probably the better approach.
