I would trade a single app bringing down the machine for this kind of thing, any time. That -is- the supposed great advantage of OS-X after all. But it seems to come with a hidden dark side of lethal directory damage. Directory damage and a kernel panic seems much worse that any crash just requiring a restart , I don't think this is great progress. I have had to really work at hosing my directories with the normal OS's, or other Apps have done it for me, like a Poser rendering file and low free disk space. I'm sceeeered. >The only other advice I have concerns mindset: > >Under Classic, the user owns the machine. > >Under OS X, the OS owns the machine. Icky. : ( But I guess we are stuck with it. Thanks much for the Disk Warrior tips...I was worried about handling that kind of thing when the time comes for me. I hope my other favorite, Data Rescue has been updated also, or that it still works. Backing up nowadays is really a task given the huge sizes of the drives. Can't use a Zip drive anymore...and my ORB drive fried leaving me with 12 gigs of useless much now unless I want to go spend another $150 for a new one that probably won't read the disk anyway...bad hardware they turned out to have. rc
