I nearly responded with a message identicaly to yours, Mars, but upon
re-reading the original message, the author is aware of this. He meant
to put a period after "zero" I think, where it would read:

the Mac didn't waste time putting all those spaces in memory to zero.
Like when you erase a file on disk,


The part that comes right after the part you quoted verifies this.
